Yaxchilan

Like everyone else, I set this tour up in downtown Palenque, and it turned into a very interesting, and thanks to the unexpected companions, a really fun day.

Sunrise found us crossing highlands already underway for hours

The whole thing was rather well organized, and this place turned out a very nice and generous breakfast. A business that kept that whole village going. They were able to handle a significant number of tour busses, small and large.

They were part of my small group and ended up delighful companions for the day
Getting ready for our ride on the Usumacinta River
Our little group. On the right side there is a dentist and his nurse wife. They are Chiapas from Oaxaca, where they live and work
And so it went for 30-40 minutes. Guatemala is on one side and Mexico on the other

The three of us went off on our own and headed for the Gran Plaza. When we entered this building, we needed flashlights (which I always carry) to get through it, to the Gran Plaza. but first we discovered that someone was still living there

The inevitable ball court. No stone hoops here either, and probably, like at Palenque, wood hoops were used
Lots of steps to climb and buildings to explore, some that have cool surprises

Yaxchilan also has over a dozen steles, some that are in great shape

Since they gave us only two hours, we knew it was time to ascend and get our butts up to the acropolis level
